Color Study

Here is a very rough color study. There isn't as much contrast in it as I usually like, but it was more of an exercise in trying something a bit different. There are a few things in here that I am pleased with.
Also, I'm trying to simplify and generalize some shapes... leaving out lines where they are not necessarily needed. I'll probably end up going really far in this direction and then pull it back a bit. Excited about possibilities.
It's a bit of a different skin tone than I usually use, and I am happy with that, simply for the sake that it is different and that I think it works okay.

Face Study

I think that succesful drawing is as much coordination as it is inspiration. It also involves a willingness to accept failure. Allowing 'failure' to happen in art makes it possible for those little pleasantries to appear - and, though they might come undbidden at first, they always seem to evolve into my favorite parts. I think this is, in some ways, how style evolves; an iterative process of mistakes that lead to something unique. There is always a more purposeful move toward 'style' as well, but I find for me that this forced path always turns out a less 'real' product.

Okay, off topic. What I meant to say after line two was that after not drawing for a while I have hardly any line coordination, little inspiration and a huge fear of failure. A little perserverance can solve this, but the first hour or so of drawing can be a huge hurdle. Anyway, after a tortuous hour of drawing last night I doodled this up. I was not pleased with it at first, but after I started throwing the colors on I became more excited about it. I guess the key is that I just need to draw a bit each day, something I mean to do!

Reboot

Wow, it's been a while since an update. My semester break, during which I had promised myself I would make lots of art, was a near disaster (as far as art goes). Completely relaxing other than that. Nevertheless, it helped to place a few things into perspective for me - mainly the fact that while I'm in school it is incredibly hard to undertake personal projects that are big and unstructured. After talking to my friend about these problems I have decided to make a few changes in my work habits that, hopefully, will lead to a steady flow of production. And, though this flow might seemingly be nothing but a trickle, over time it will surely amount to something. I hope to post these tricklings here much more frequently, as well as posting things related to school and life in general.

To sort of 'commemorate' this, I have retooled my blog a bit. Stay tuned for more (in the past that probably would have been an empty promise, but I aim to fix that).
